Why I Built a New Tool for Crafting Image Prompts

If you’re interested in AI art, you know that the key to creating great images is the prompts you provide to your model. But finding the right words to express your vision can be a challenge. How do you capture the essential features of the image you want in a way that an AI can understand?

One approach I like is to start with a visual inspiration—a photograph or artwork that captures the mood, style, or subject matter you want to explore. But even with an image in hand, writing a prompt can be tricky.

For instance, an AI might recognize this image of an astronaut as exhibiting styles like tonalism, redshift, and chillwave. To many humans, those words will sound a bit like a foreign language.

That’s why I’ve built a tool, ImageToPrompt, that uses AI to analyze an image and generate a prompt that you can use with the image generator of your choice. For example, if you uploaded the astronaut image, ImageToPrompt might output a prompt like this:

A man riding on the back of a white horse, an album cover by Storm Thorgerson, trending on zbrush central, tonalism, quantum wavetracing, redshift, chillwave

With this prompt in hand, you can experiment with different styles and parameters to create exactly the image you want. I hope this approach will help prompt crafters draw inspiration from photos and from each other’s work, and uncover new creative directions.

This is a work in progress, so if you have any feedback, please email me at charlie@imagetoprompt.com. Thanks for trying it out!
